Case Study: Bolton Adhesives Recycled Cartridges

As part of Bolton, we acknowledge the urgency to contribute to tackling global warming. That’s why we are committed to reducing our CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. A large part of our emissions comes from our purchased goods and services (Scope 3.1 emissions). Therefore, we are engaged in aligning our product portfolio to sustainability, aiming to increase the circularity of our packaging and formulations.

An important early milestone on the roadmap was to reduce the use of virgin plastics by changing to thin-wall cartridges for a large part of our portfolio more than 10 years ago. By doing this, we save around 80 tons of plastics per year.

A further big step, starting from 2024 onwards will be the increased use of recycled material, leading to a further reduction in the use of virgin plastics and thus also to improved CO2 emissions of our cartridge packaging and respective products. An example is our Poly Max® products, which are delivered in a distinctive red cartridge and are now made from 50% post-consumer recycled plastic. Furthermore, our black cartridge packaging used for various product concepts like Montagekit, Liquid Rubber, Grizzly Montage and You Can Stick are now made with 95% post-consumer recycled plastic. In total this leads to an additional saving of more than 35% in the use of virgin plastic for our cartridges per year.

These changes wouldn’t have been possible without the great engagement of our internal teams from Marketing, R&D, Procurement and Supply Chain and - not to forget - the good cooperation with our cartridge supplier. This was needed to make sure that the recycled material can be sourced at a consistent high quality that has no influence on the adhesives performance, and at the same time offers the benefits of a more sustainable material for our customers, consumers and the environment.

Key to success in our decarbonization path will be communication and co-operation. We are aware that it is necessary to communicate with full transparency about our goals and achievements and to involve our whole supply chain. The Make it Zero initiative is a great initiative to support this engagement through joint efforts, create synergies across the supply chain.
