Case Study: Bosch Measuring Tools

Bosch Measuring Tools range

Bosch Power Tools is taking a big step towards reducing its impact with its new range of measuring technology for DIY customers. This includes aspects of the design and manufacture of the products themselves, in addition to packaging and even the supporting marketing campaign.

More than 70% of Bosch Power Tools’ CO2 emissions are caused by the plastic and metal of a tool’s housing, accessories and packaging. With the aim to become more sustainable than ever and use critical resources more efficiently, Bosch conducted comprehensive lifecycle assessments. which helped them pinpoint carbon hotspots from production of the raw materials, through manufacture of the product, to its distribution, use, and ultimate disposal at end-of-life. If the analysis revealed an increased environmental impact of a certain plastic or metal, they reduce its use or replaced them entirely with a recycled alternative.

Bosch Power Tools converted their entire Measuring Tools DIY portfolio – consisting of 23 tools and 8 accessories - and use an average of 80% recycled plastic for the tool housings and accessories. Energy-intensive virgin aluminium for  tripods was replaced by recycled aluminium. Packaging now uses 70% recycled fibres, while operating manuals are made entirely from them. Other improvements to packaging include the elimination of PVC, polybags and plastic battery wraps.

Bosch Power Tools have also optimised logistics by reducing packaging volume. Each measure reduces the need for virgin material and helps to reduce waste. To communicate this, even the production of media assets was carbon-neutral (through reduction measures and compensation where required).

The project directly contributes to Bosch's ambitious goal to reduce CO2 emissions in Scope 3 by 15% by 2030. It also contributes to the reduction of value chain emissions of its retailers. Indirectly, the knowledge can be leveraged not only within Bosch Measuring Tools, but within wider Power Tools divisions (and beyond) selling millions of tool per year.
