Product Carbon Footprint Guide

The purpose of this guide is to provide implementable, step-by-step guidance on the use of Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) in the DIY sector for both suppliers and retailers. For suppliers, the guide is intended to support the development of their own PCF calculation approaches in line with recognised industry standards, providing clarity on data requirements, calculation boundaries and good practice expectations. 

For retailers, it explains the key steps involved in calculating a PCF so that they can engage more effectively with suppliers, respond knowledgeably to methodological questions, provide appropriate support where data or capability gaps exist, and better understand supplier PCFs they receive. The guidance also sets out how PCFs can be used by retailers to inform and strengthen their corporate carbon inventories, particularly in relation to Scope 3 emissions. 

The use of this guide complements the PACT framework by translating its principles into sector-relevant guidance adhering to the cross-sector methodology. PACT methodology remains the primary standard, with this guide providing additional detail, interpretation and practical tools that reflect the specific characteristics of DIY products and supply chains. In doing so, it aims to give both retailers and suppliers the confidence to apply PACT consistently, improve data quality over time and embed PCFs within routine business decision making.
